Memory 096 – Captain EO Tribute Starring Michael Jackson

Come and join us for another installment of the WDW-Memories podcast, where I try to make it possible for you relive your Walt Disney World Memories when you can’t actually be there.

I have just returned from a long weekend trip to Washington, DC where I got to watch my Godson graduate High School with High Honors. I’m very proud of him, and all he has accomplished, and I look forward to seeing all he will accomplish in the years to come, and see how he will Change the world. Speaking of changing the world, we’re going to visit a Memory predicated on Changing a world also. Today we get to ride Captain EO.

Our request today came from Jason on our Facebook page. He wrote:

…I would love to hear captain eo if you have it. My friends and I and my brother all love that show! If you have a recording of it I’d appreciate it. Thank again

Unfortunately Jason, I haven’t been to see Captain EO in Epcot yet, well at least not in the last 30 years. We do have this short video clip of it from a trip back in 1986, but it sounds bad and looks horrible by todays standards, so I probably won’t be sharing that. I was however very fortunate to get to see it in Disneyland on our trip to California back in June of 2010 for my brothers Wedding.

Now I have to admit, I didn’t remember much about this movie other than the brief clip we had from our 1986 video, so I was looking forward to refreshing my memory of it. The music is just awesome 80’s, and being a child of the 80’s, I loved it. I honestly see this movie as one of those cult classics, one that is so bad, but it is loved for it’s badness, and because of that, it’s awesome. Does that make sense? The effects are good (for that time of course). I didn’t notice the “bouncing” as much. Maybe they had toned it down by then. In any case I enjoyed this tribute once again returning to the Disney Parks.

As always, I tossed it out to you the listeners on our social media sites, and most of what I got back was “haven’t seen it yet” or “haven’t seen it since I was a kid”. I would encourage you to go back and see it on your next trip. Put those images firmly in your mind, so when later your kids ask you who this Michael Jackson guy was, you’ll have a great memory to share with them.

So today’s memory begins in mid afternoon. It’s been an awesome day in Disneyland. We’ve been on a bunch of attractions as crowds are nominal. The kids are in need of a break and just want to snack and play for a bit, so my wife and soon to be Sister-in-law offer to watch them while a few of us get in line. We’ll join the memory as we get to the holding area and the pre-show video is playing. We don’t have to wait long before the doors open and we are let in. We’ll take our seats and the movie begins.

Today’s memory is in binaural, so I’d suggest putting those headphones on to fully immerse yourself in the memory.
