Come and join us for another installment of the WDW-Memories podcast, where I try to make it possible for you relive your Walt Disney World Memories when you can’t actually be there.
What an awesome weekend! I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of Thunder Over Louisville, but it’s probably in the top 5 things our city is known for, but most people just don’t think of it. We have great things such as The Kentucky Derby, Bourbon, The Louisville Slugger Museum, and College Basketball, but Thunder probably isn’t known to too many folks outside the area. Each year at the start of the Derby season they put on an air show all day and finish it off with one of the largest fireworks shows in the country, FOR FREE. Almost a million people come down for it, and this year we had some of the best weather on record with sunny days and temps in the 70’s. It was awesome. Almost as good as being in Walt Disney World… almost.
Let’s pick back up with our day in the Magic Kingdom. Remember, it’s a quiet day (a 3/10 on TouringPlans.com). In Memory 113, we got to spend some time taking pictures with some of our favorite Disney characters. We met Daisy, Minnie, Goofy, and Donald all with just a short amount of time. But now the kids are hungry, so let’s see if we can get into the newly opened Be Our Guest Restaurant.
We’re still back in the new Fantasyland, and as we leave Storybook Circus, we’ll head back past Ariel and around the corner to the line. Yes I said line. This counter service has a line, and on this hot sunny day, they’re even passing out umbrellas and giving free ice water. It’s only 11AM and we will still spend 15 minutes waiting to get in. Finally we’re allowed inside to yet another line where we get to order using the new kiosk menu system.
The Kiosks are arranged around a room and we are told which one to go to. We already had the opportunity in line to review the lunch menu, so we pretty much know what we want. We order with little fuss, swipe the credit card (which to me faces the wrong way, but we figure it out) and are handed a Rose disc thing and told to go find a seat and they’ll bring us our food.
The main dining hall is packed, and I know the West Wing will scare my small children, so we head to the Rose Gallery. There’s a large Music Box in the middle playing wonderful relaxing music, the chairs are fairly comfortable, and the tapestries and artwork hung on the walls give you pleanty to look at and explore as you await your food. Finally our food arrives and we get to eat.
After lunch, we’ll pack the kids back up and head to the Tomorrowland Speedway for the kids first turn at driving. We split up boys-vs-girls, and hop into our cars. Susie steers while Traci pushes the pedal, and I have to drive Mikey still. There is a bit of a problem with the loading, we somehow lost our car and didn’t want to be split up so it takes a second for them to straighten things out and get someone loaded but eventually things progress and we get going. After we are done, you’ll hear the kids hop out and just get so excited by the amount of fun they had. Like everything else, they want to do it again.
So, this again will be where we’ll end this memory, and we’ll pick up next time with more fun from the Magic Kingdom.
For your benefit, I’m going to cut some stuff out while we’re eating so you don’t have to listen to the complete silence while we’re standing in line, or while I’m actually eating (nothing like hearing someone chew in your ears). But other than that, we’ll keep right on with our day.
So Be Our Guest is obviously a wonderful addition to the Magic Kingdom. We finally have a quality dining experience in the parks that can even hold up to the quick service needs to get you back out on the rides. They even have some good options for the kids also. If you want a detailed review, check out my trip report back in Memory 103. We’ll just say, have the roast beef sandwich, you won’t be disappointed.
The Tomorrowland Speedway is always a great ride for the kids. I remember as a child waiting forever for this attraction, or riding similar ones at our local amusement park growing up. What kid doesn’t want to drive their own vehicle, and Disney does it so well, making this attraction special to even the smallest of riders. It might not be as exciting for someone able to drive a real car, but it shouldn’t be overlooked, especially if the line is short.
Today’s memory is in binaural, so I’d suggest putting those headphones on to fully immerse yourself in the memory.
